A Brief History of WMSA
On October 12, 1945, WMSA radio in Massena, owned by the Brockway Company of Watertown, began its first broadcast at 1340 AM.  The station was established by media mogul Harold B. Johnson, president of the  Brockway company and the editor-publisher of the Watertown Daily Times.  Thomas McHugh served as the first station manager for nearly twenty-seven years.  Jim Higgins was the first program director.
In September 1948, WMSA launched an FM station that continued in operation only until 1960.  The company also experimented with stereo broadcasting on both AM and FM, before such operation became a regular part of the industry.
The company changed hands several times.  Black River Communications took over the operation in 1980, following by two short term owners in the mid 1990s.  WMSA was acquired by Martz Communications in 1999, before being sold to the Stephens Media Group on February 1, 2008.
