“DIY” Sauerkraut Workshop
POTSDAM, NY — The public is invited to attend a workshop, where they will make a large batch of sauerkraut and learn more about fermented foods, probiotics and “gut health.”
Coordinated by the Local Living Venture (LLV), this is another in a continuing series of their “Nutritious Delicious (And Cheap!)” cooking seminars.
“Full Ferment: Making Sauerkraut” is presented with sponsorship by the Potsdam Food Co-op & Carriage House Bakery and presented by Adirondack author and columnist Yvona Fast along with her mother, Dana Fast, who brought this old-world recipe to America.
This class will show you how to “do it yourself” for good health, sharing recipes and techniques, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30 near Potsdam, NY. Registration is required for the location, as there is a limit to the class size.
This event is a hands-on, “bring your aprons” workshop. Attendees will learn how to create delicious home made sauerkraut, and the benefits of incorporating fermented foods into their daily diet. The suggested donation is $24 per person, $45 couple, $12 for students, with scholarships available.
Participants will chop and pack sauerkraut into crocks and leave with the understanding that fermentation is a process that takes some care to create, for future enjoyment and good health. Each participant will have the opportunity to bring home a share of their labors.
Fermented foods are known to aid in digestion (essentially, they are a partially digested food) and to support the immune system by helping us to absorb important nutrients from our food. Dill pickles, sauerkraut and other fermented foods are rich in enzyme activity that breaks down food for ease of digestion. These are among the many health benefits of a diet rich in sauerkraut.
The presenters of this “Nutritious Delicious” workshop are a well known mother and daughter duo, Yvona Fast and her mother Dana Fast. Yvona is the author of several books and writes the weekly column, the “North Country Kitchen” for the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
This dynamic duo will share how our modern diet does not promote a healthy gut, but how this can be remedied via probiotics such as fermented foods. Their old family recipe is sure to please lovers of sauerkraut.
The Local Living Venture (LLV) sponsors workshops promoting traditional rural and simple living skills with the motto “Sharing Knowledge from the Past – Building Skills for the Future.”
Listings of upcoming resourceful living workshops and events are on the Full Events Schedule page at www.LocalLivingVenture.org. New topics and local workshop presenters are always sought and welcome.
Co-sponsoring the event is the Potsdam Food Co-op at 24 Elm St., Potsdam, NY. They strive to provide a pleasant shopping experience, with an emphasis on education and sharing information with the community. The Co-op (www.PotsdamCoop.com) carries local, natural and healthful foods and is open to the public (no membership required) from 8 a.m to 7 p.m., seven days a week.
Class size is limited so attendees must RSVP for the location near Potsdam, NY.
